The Best Marketing Message in the World Is Useless If Nobody Sees It

19 June 2026 · Insights

Most businesses spend a surprising amount of time preparing marketing campaigns.

The offer is discussed. The wording is refined. Images are chosen. Drafts are reviewed. Changes are made. More changes are made. Eventually, after days or sometimes weeks of preparation, the campaign is finally sent.

And then something strange happens.

Nothing.

Not because the offer was poor. Not because the message was badly written. Not because customers suddenly lost interest.

Quite often, it’s because a large percentage of the intended audience never saw it in the first place. That’s the uncomfortable reality of modern marketing.

The biggest challenge is often not what you say.
It’s whether anyone sees it.

Why Email Open Rates and SMS Visibility Are So Different

The difference between email open rates and SMS engagement is often less about the message itself and more about how people interact with each channel throughout the day.

Email inboxes are crowded. Social media feeds move quickly. Algorithms decide who sees what and when. Even customers who genuinely want to hear from you can miss important messages simply because they arrive at the wrong time or become buried amongst everything else competing for attention.

Most of us experience this every day.

Open your email inbox and you’ll probably find dozens, perhaps hundreds, of unread messages. Look at your social media notifications and you’ll often see a similar story. Small red circles displaying numbers that have quietly accumulated over days or weeks.

Now look at your text messages. For many people, there are very few unread SMS messages. Often none at all.

That’s not because text messages are somehow more interesting than every other form of communication. It’s because people treat them differently.

A text message feels immediate. It arrives directly on a device that is already within reach. Most people glance at it almost instinctively, often within seconds of receiving it.

That behaviour matters. Because the value of any marketing message depends on it being seen.

What if you sent a text message instead?

You may be surprised to learn that around 98% of text messages are opened or read, and most are read within minutes of arriving. Whether someone acts on the message is another question entirely, but unlike many other marketing channels, the message at least has the opportunity to be considered.

And that opportunity is where everything starts.

A beautifully designed email that remains unopened creates no response. A carefully planned social campaign that never appears in someone’s feed creates no action. Visibility comes before engagement.

Without visibility, nothing else matters.

This is one of the reasons SMS continues to perform so well despite being one of the oldest forms of digital communication available.

It doesn’t rely on algorithms. It doesn’t require an app download. It doesn’t ask customers to actively go looking for it.

It simply arrives.

That doesn’t make SMS the answer to every marketing challenge. Email still has an important role. Social media still builds awareness. Long-form content still creates authority.

But when timing matters and visibility matters, few channels perform as consistently.

Because before customers can respond, book, buy, or enquire, they need to see the message.

And that is where many marketing campaigns fail long before the customer has made any decision at all.
